I think you will have a hard time releaseing your film independantly due to the fact that cinemas are very greedy. Many of them in london for example, where I live, do not even show films such as Traffic and Being John Malkovich because they can fill more seats showing kids films. It will be hard convincing anyone that your film will put bums on seats, most of all because you will not have the funds or exposure for your film to advertise it to an extent that they can expect a worthwhile audience.
If you do decide to to follow this route I suggest making a concentrated advertising campaign in one small town or area and then persuade the local theatre to show your film.

Rodriguez tells us how he just copied his film onto video from 16mm then sent it to people who had the ability to advertise and then distribute it.
The great thing about film is that not many people have a finished one that they wish to be distributed. I work mostly in the music business where demo tapes are coming out of peoples ears but a finished film ready to put in the vcr is very easy to 'shop' to people.
If you have actually made your film, congratulations. If it is any good you are more than half way there and people will be going out of their way to distribute it for you. With the advent of musical technology anyone and their sister is making a record and lets face it, if my sister made a record, it would be crap. The charts are made up by more than half with records made independantly, 'shopped' to major companies who then publish and distribute them and make a lot of money fast.
From a film point of view, The Blair Witch Project shows how desperate the industry was to exploit a film that cost them nothing to make. All they had to do was find it. In this case it was through a major festival and a second film has been made already.

If you have made your film I have a lot of great contacts. This is no bullshit. I am a member of a club in london where producers, actors and general industry people hang out all the time and if you had a film worth presenting to them I would happily do it. Just think about the fact that if they are not willing to distribute it then why would a theatre take it on from you as distributer.
Hopefully you have a real winner on your hands and with that you can't lose.

I may be able to help - at least in terms of the UK. But I'd need to know what kind of film you've made and the format etc, etc. I've worked in film exhibition for several years here in the UK. Either email me or post a reply to the board, better still do both!
